7 Ways To Improve Your Communication Skills As A Filmmaker

How your communication skills can help you land the work of your dream in the film industry?

In the film industry, which is a very small industry, everyone knows everyone: who is good & reliable, and who you want to avoid working with.

This is unspoken, but everyone knows that.

Especially in this industry a good filmmaker’s reputation is a BIG thing.

If you recommended yourself as a good, skillful filmmaking professional, with great communications skills, everyone will want to hire you.

You should always keep that in your mind.

Communication skills is very important.

If you don’t have good communication skills and consider yourself as a great filmmaker, people will not hire you, simply because in the middle of the long and tiring production, no one wants to deal with person with it whom it is difficult to communicate, who easily gets upset and performs unreliably because of his/her moods.

How can you learn to communicate everything in a quick and efficient, polite and respectful manner, in the middle of long & chaotic production, on the fly, and also tired people?

Here are 7 ways to improve your communication skills:

  1. Learn how to listen to others, without interrupting them. Because people want to know that they are being heard. Really listen to what the other person is saying, instead of formulating your response. The person you are talking to will notice it in your eyes.
  2. Who you are talking to matters. Be polite and respectful to anyone you are talking with: your boss, your family, or a crew member. Use formal language when you are talking to you boss and colleagues.
  1. Body Language is important, it is 55 % of your communication. Keep you gestures open, and remember to maintain eye contact, to show your attention.
  2. Be brief and specific. You have to practice being brief, yet specific enough, that you can provide enough information for the other person to understand what you want to tell him.
  3. Think before you speak. Pause before you speak, and pay close attention to what you say, and how you say it.
  4. Be polite and treat everyone with respect, especially when you are angry, tired or impatient. If you can’t, then take a break and tell them why.
  5. Always have a positive attitude and smile. When you smile and you have a positive attitude, people will respond positively to you.

So, where can you learn and practice all these skills?

Find a Toastmasters Club near you.

Film Premiere “Sam’s Firecracker”

The purpose of any film is to touch the hearts of people and share with them a story they can relate to. What a great event we had tonight at the Yorkville American Legion Post #489! Veterans’ hearts were touched by a heartfelt story between Iraqi war veteran father with PTSD (actor C.J. Julianus) and his son Sam (actor Sheridan Archbold.) When I saw tears on veterans faces I understood that I accomplished my mission with “Sam’s Firecracker” chief goal was to bring families together, to find understanding between their hero father and a teenage son. Thank you, Veterans, for your service! ACA Production’s team is so happy to know that you not only like the film, but it may help to get more understanding between you, your family, your children, and grandchildren. This film all veterans family’s Must Watch.
With the veterans of the Yorkville American Legion Post #489 and the lead actor (Father)C.J. Julianus at the end of the premiere of the patriotic film “Sam’s Firecracker”.

Don’t Get Delusional Prior Starting Your New Film

Don’t Get Delusional Prior Starting Your New Film Project                                        It’s very important to be very realistic before you go into your new film project. While I was working on my own projects and doing film trend researches I had the privilege to meet and talk with several film industry professionals who told me all. I am not going to tell you all but will throw a few questions that may help you to take off from your emotional “lala land” and land you softly to a very tough filmmaking business.  Ask yourself these questions before you start your new film project:

  1. What is my financial goal for this project?
  2. If my film under one million, will I be able to recoup my, investors money and make income with my project?
  3. Will I be able to pay to myself for my 2-3 types of work that I will be doing for this project?
  4. What is my worse scenario budget for my new film?
  5. What is the target audience?
  6. What is my filmmaking competition is doing?
  7. How much if any money my competition is able to make with similar to your film projects?
  8. Will you self-distribute, do hybrid distribution, or traditional?
  9. What is the outcome?
  10. Do I know how many titles each month the most distributors deal with?
  11. Do I know how many titles from those 15-20 new titles that most distributors deal every month really perform, or make some money at least during the “honeymoon” period?
  12. Do you know what are the distribution contract terms right now?
  13. Did you ever think if your film will not perform well, you will be stuck for 5 years with your film and will not be able to do anything with it, because of the contract you’ll sign will be at least for 3-5 years? Eventually, you will have your film under the contract but you will have no right to your own film. How do you like this idea?
  14. Did you think how and where you can sell your film yourself or by using your contacts?
  15. Do you still think it’s a good idea to start your new film?

Good luck!
